Sorry everyone…I know some of you were looking forward to a Tasteful Tuesday but this week was donated to Miley.

Miley 110909

Monday and Tuesday this past week, Miley spent her days with me at the vet hospital.  She had a mild case of colitis and needed to be taken outside for potty time about every 2 hours.  Dr. Bonnie recommended feeding I/d (a chicken and rice formula food) and some metronidazole to get the diarrhea under control.  The I/d was easy for her to digest and allowed her tummy a chance to rest while getting over this miserable time.

Wednesday, February 3rd, Miley had her hip evaluation at Mississippi State University.   Dr. Leonardo Baez was the surgical resident who reviewed Miley’s case.  He diagnosed Miley with Bilateral Hip Dysplasia with left subluxation and right luxation.

Miley’s orthopedic exam revealed pain upon palpation and manipulation of both coxofemoral joints, along with crepitus and positive Ortalani sign present in the left coxofemoral joint.  In other words, there is a popping sound (crepitus) and a palpable sensation (positive Ortolani’s sign) when the femoral head pops out of the acetabulum.

Dr. Baez recommended a Total Hip Replacement surgery to salvage function and alleviate pain in the right hip.

We scheduled her surgery to occur on Friday, March 12th when she is 11 months old and closer to full maturity.   In the time before her surgery, Miley will receive IV antibiotics to reduce her risk of infection.  They will also shave her leg and watch for inflammation after clipping.  On Friday, March 12th, Miley will take a long nap and have her hip replaced.

And hopefully…she’ll get back to running and playing with her favorite buddy, Emily!
